The Queen of My Dreams
Event details
Directed By Fawzia Mirza
Starring Amrit Kaur, Hamza Haq, Nimra Bucha
A shared love of old South Asian films brings an emigrant Pakistani mother and daughter together in this warm-hearted, time-shifting Urdu and English languages comedy drama about cultural and generational divides.
Azra is worlds apart from her conservative Muslim mother. When her father suddenly dies on a trip home to Pakistan, Azra finds herself on a Bollywood-inspired journey through memories, both real and imagined; from her mother’s youth in Karachi to her own coming- of-age in rural Canada.
While paying homage to the classic Bollywood film and song “Meri Sapno Ki Rani” (literally “The Queen of My Dreams”), the film’s heart lies in director Fawzia Mirza’s very personal look at her own family dynamics and quest for self-discovery. The film is an insightful, comedic, and moving examination of South Asian identity.
Recorded intro
All screenings of The Queen of My Dreams will include recorded intro from Reclaim The Frame Head of Audience Engagement Aashna Thakkar and the film’s writer-director Fawzia Mirza, who speaks of the semi-autobiographical origins of the story and how it takes a village to make a movie (“in my case two!”)
Reclaim The Frame champions marginalised perspectives in cinema, and connects with audience through community building and conversation.
