The Matrix

Hacker Neo (Keanu Reeves) is sought out to save the world.  In order to do this, he finds out that his consciousness is part of a Matrix that keeps human bodies redundant and occupies their minds with a false reality.  Is he “The One” to save humanity from destruction? Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), an elusive figure, may answer this question. When Neo is contacted by Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), she leads him into an underworld where they fight a brutal battle for their lives against a cadre of viciously intelligent secret agents.

This screening has been programmed in partnership with the Chester Film Society.

Why we chose it…

The Matrix set a new standard for the action film genre by redefining how these movies looked and felt, and spawning many parodies and copy-cats. In helping to articulate why modern life felt so ‘false‘, and found fans everywhere from the Christian church to the queer community, and everyone in between. Indeed, the Wachowskis conceived it as an allegory for what it feels like to be trans in a cis-dominated world.
