PlayTime
Presented by Storyhouse Young Film Programmers
Event details
Part of: YFP: Electric Hearts | Chester International Film Festival 2025 (CIFF25)
Directed by Jacques Tati
Starring Jacques Tati, Barbara Dennek
Once a box office failure, now a staggering masterpiece of French cinema. PlayTime is Jacques Tati’s satirical vision of a highly technologised Paris that, although designed for utmost convenience, serves only to alienate our protagonist – a bumbling Monsieur Hulot.
Released in 1967, PlayTime was the most expensive film made in France at the time due to the extraordinary lengths Tati went to to realise his vision, which included shooting on 70mm film and building his own stylised city.
PlayTime is a humorous, visually spectacular portrait of a society distracted by shiny gadgets and endless bureaucracy, where true connection can only be forged once these things are stripped away.
